About Chandigarh:

Known as the city beautiful, Chandigarh is a city and union territory in northwestern India, serving as the shared capital of the states of Punjab and Haryana. Situated in the foothills of the Shivalik range of the Himalayas, Chandigarh is one of the earliest planned cities in post-independence India. It is internationally known for its architecture and urban design. Planned by the Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier, its Capitol Complex – as a part of a global ensemble of Le Corbusier’s buildings – was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in July 2016. It covers an area of approximately 114 Km2.

Chandigarh has one of the highest per capita incomes in the country, the third-highest Human Development Index (HDI) among Indian states and territories. It has the largest number of per-capita vehicles in India. Rated as one of the wealthiest towns of India, Chandigarh is also ranked 4th in the top 50 cities identified globally as “emerging outsourcing and IT services destinations”. The city is well connected by road, rail and air.

There are numerous private and publicly operated educational institutions in Chandigarh – including Panjab University, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Punjab Engineering College (PEC), Institute for Development and Communication (IDC), Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH), National Institute of Technical Teacher Training and Research (NITTTR) – among others.

Experiences of the 2023-2024 (SICI-IDC) Alumni Interns  Five (5) Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute (SICI) interns from different institutions of Alberta, Canada were formally inducted at the Institute for Development and Communication (IDC), Chandigarh on 2nd July 2024. Isabella Mathews Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) The SICI internship helped me collaborate with other students, meet new people, and learning about things specific to India. The internship at IDC has given me unique opportunities to know that I couldn’t have got anywhere else. The overall internship experience was good; I felt I had time for both working and exploring/socialising. Jessica Sumbera University of Lethbridge The SICI internship gave me the opportunity to learn about the differences in the professional environment. I learnt about practices and traditional beliefs. It helped me step out of my comfort zone and be courageous. The internship at IDC helped me to learn about a topic I was unfamiliar with. I had a healthy work-life balance—lots of opportunity for growth in both areas. Erika Evasiuk Olds College of Agriculture and Technology The SICI internship has taught me how to manage my time better, as well as learning about many aspects of India’s government structure, policies and more. Having weekly check-ins with my supervisors at IDC was helpful to me, and I really appreciate their guidance. Having my own personal cubicle was also very nice. Overall, the internship helped me to be more disciplined and focused. Tristan Dell University of Alberta The SICI internship gave me the opportunity to learn about data collection, engaging in cultural exchange and building professional connections. Being in India gave me a much broader worldview and artistic lens. It also helped me to adapt to a new cultural setting and environmental landscape. Thanks to IDC. Ryan Michael Ware Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) The SICI internship helped me learn about the Indian culture and existing differences. I could explore machine learning for the first time and will continue to pursue it. At the beginning, it was straight work as this machine learning stuff was utterly new to me, but as time went on, I focused more on enjoying during my stay at the hostel and at the institute.
