Eminent Economist and Former Union Minister Yoginder K Alagh Dies at 83

Prof. Y.K. Alagh a renowned economist, academician and former Union Minister expired on 6th December 2022 at his residence in Ahmedabad. IDC faculty and staff met to offer their condolences on the sad demise of Prof. Alagh .
Prof. Y.K. Alagh was a founder member of the Institute for Development and Communication (IDC), Chandigarh, and also the Chairperson of the IDC society.
He studied at the University of Rajasthan and later got a Doctorate in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania, USA. He taught economics at prestigious Indian and foreign universities, including IIM-Calcutta, and also functioned as the Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) 1992-96, Delhi. He also served as Chairman of the Institute of Rural Management Anand (2006-12). He was the Chancellor of the Central University of Gujarat, Gandhinagar. Prof. Alagh was an Emeritus Professor and founder-Director of the Sardar Patel Institute of Economic and Social Research (SPIESR) Ahmedabad.
From 1996-98, Alagh served as the Union Minister of State with independent charge of Power, Science & Technology and Planning and Programme Implementation in the Government of India. He was also a member of the Planning Commission between 1987-1990.
A condolence meeting was held at IDC on 08.12.2022. The members of the faculty, staff and members of IDC Society remembered his contributions to the public policy, planning and promoting academic excellence and evidence based research.
Prof. Pramod Kumar, Director IDC, in his obituary reference highlighted that he represented an era in which rigours of qualitative and quantitative data were relied upon for public policy. His contribution was seminal.
Prof. B.S. Ghuman, former Vice Chancellor Punjabi University, Patiala, remembered his emphasis on the need for dialogical tradition in knowledge generation.
Prof. H.S. Shergill shared his experience of having in-depth interactions with him on agriculture policy planning.
His death is a big loss for the whole of the academic community. We pray to the almighty to give strength to the family to bear this irreparable loss. May the departed soul rest in peace.
